Marla Mossman

Artist Statement

Marla Mossman was born in Detroit, Michigan, raised and educated in Canada. She is an international photographer, artist, and poet who has traveled extensively documenting the human condition for over 20 years. Avidly interested in promoting arts and education, she co-established non-profit art organizations; MMARTS in London and Art Soup in Santa Barbara, CA, which developed permanent exhibition spaces for local artists. She is also the co-founder of ImagineAsia, a non-profit whose mission is to provide education and healthcare to rural Asian communities. Her current endeavor is the Peace Caravan Project, which is one woman’s journey along the Silk Road, searching for her cultural and religious heritage and its connection to Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam.

Marla has been to the Silk Road region 4 times, and most recently, to she traveled to Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Israel documenting historical places and people along the Silk Road. She was in Afghanistan in 2005 as a photographer and the director of ImagineAsia. Marla was the first foreigner and woman to visit a remote part of Central Afghanistan on horseback. On an earlier trip to Northern India, Marla hiked and backpacked 18,000 ft. in the Himalayas to obtain her photographs. She has traveled extensively in Europe and the UK, Peru, Turkey, Thailand, Nepal, Indonesia and backpacked the Himalayas, the Inca Trail, and the High Sierras.

When not traveling Marla Mossman currently resides in New York.
