Artist Statement
Doctor or artist? I couldn’t decide
at 18. So, I became an art therapist and worked at Bellevue
Psychiatric Hospital for 15 years with outsider artists--
psychotics, drug addicts, delinquents, demented old folks.
More touched by the stories they told than
the images they made, I was on the path to psychoanalysis
…Psychoanalytic training, teaching, private practice…
Writing The Money Mirror, a non-fiction book, and
publicizing the book on “Oprah” and other talk
shows… Writing poetry, short stories, plays….
Language dominated my world. I forgot how
to see.
After a silent retreat at the Zen Mountain
Monastery, I experienced what the Gestalt therapist Fritz
Perls called “losing you mind and coming to your senses.”
Each day my camera reminds me that what I
do as an artist is what I do as a psychoanalyst. I make the
time and space to be present in the moment, to let the subjects
reveal themselves to me.
I hope to create through my work a new space
in which to penetrate beneath the surface of conventional
reality and to bring the viewer to a sense of oneness and
healing.
